The contraction got stronger and lengthier each time. I knew I would be giving birth earlier than expected.

“Easy,” I told my baby, fifteen minutes aboard our reliable motorcycle to the hospital and everything would be alright.

Three weeks early!

Aside from the pangs of childbirth, I had to mentally check our cash on hand. The private hospital where my ob-gyne was accredited charges P5,000 as downpayment way before any medical instrument touches one’s body. But I had no choice. I had post-partum bleeding with my first child, and that was just a year ago. We could not risk the chance. I prayed fervently for a normal and safe delivery. There was one glitch though, my SSS benefit would come only two to three weeks after. Our conjugal income, on the other hand, was only enough for our daily needs.

This happened almost three years ago. On September 20, 2008, I gave birth via normal delivery to a healthy baby boy. We named him Sean, brother to Shayne, our daughter. Both names mean “God is gracious.”

I needed to make smart choices especially because my mother was just a homemaker and my father had to retire early due to illness.
